OneDrive issues users 90 day notice

Microsoft has given its users of there cloud storage service OneDrive, their 90-day notice. Microsoft is shrinking its free storage size from 15GB to 5GB in late July. That is a 67% reduction in storage size. The reduction will take effect on July 27,2016.

As part of the storage space cuts, Microsoft eliminated two paid plans that had offered 100GB for $2 per month and 200GB for $4 a month. Instead, it now offers only a 50GB Plan for only $2 a month.

If you are effected by the shrinking we recommend backing up all OneDrive data.

Shortcuts disappearing – Windows 7 desktop – Network drives

If shortcuts including network drives links are disappearing randomly from Windows 7 Desktops, here what you can do to address issue:

1)) Apply the following hotfix from Microsoft

http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/Windows%207/Windows%20Server2008%20R2%20SP1/sp2/Fix385439/7600/free/441224_intl_x64_zip.exe

2)) Disable “System Maintenance troubleshooter” Control Panel.  Go to Control panel

  • In control Panel (Change view to  Category).  Under System and Security, click Find and fix problems.
  • Click Change settings on the left side and change Computer Maintenance to Off.

3)) Go to the Scheduled tasks in Accessories and delete any entries related to Windows troubleshooting or clean-up.

4)) Try to rebuild the Icon Cache.

  • First, change Folders View to show hidden files – this can be found under Folder options
  • Go to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local
  • Find the IconCache.db file, and rename it to IconCache.db.back.  Close and restart.

Multiple WiFi APs – WAPs – Same SSID – Zero hand-off

If you are looking to have a reliable WiFi solution where you will have multiple WAPs covering a wide physical area, and would like them to broadcast the same SSID, you can accomplish without even considering a WiFi controller.   Fairly easy and affordable.  Worked great every time for us.

Consider Cisco WAP 551.

It costs a couple hindered dollar for each Cisco WAP551.  They are P0E.  Once you configure the first one which usually takes 10 minutes, configuring the 2nd one would take less considering you can enable the “Single Point Setup” which acts as a cluster, so once you assign the 2nd WAP an IP address, and join it to the cluster,  all configuration will replicate from first WAP to the 2nd.

Pretty easy and straight forward setup.  Works perfectly especially for those who are looking for zero hand-off when roaming through the space.  This is what we have experienced.  Some people have reported 1-2 seconds for hand-off.

Veeam error – Cannot complete the operation because the file or folder [] already exists

You are getting this error in Veeam replication.

Processing Server01 Error: Cannot complete the operation because the file or folder [] already exists

Details

Preparing replica VM Error: Cannot complete the operation because the file or folder [] already exists
Error: Cannot complete the operation because the file or folder [] already exists

Solutions:

Open VMware vCenter and connect to the remote site (the DR site where the VMs are replicated to), and right click on the replicated VM that is having the issue and choose Delete from disk.

This will allow that VM to replicate again without issues.

How to Reset Forgotten Windows Administrator Password

How to Force STOP/Kill a service – Windows server

To Force stop or kill a Windows server service stuck in stopping status, run Command Line as an Admin.  Type:

taskkill /f /pid [PID]

Where PID is the process ID.  You can find the process ID of that service in Task Manager under Processes.  In the View menu of the Task manager you can choose to show the Process ID.

Or you can find the PID from Command Line.  Go to Command line and type:

sc queryex ServiceName

You can find the ServiceName by going to Services and double-click on the service that you want to stop/kill.

Database is mandatory on UserMailbox. Property Name: Database

When you try to install the mailbox role of Exchange 2010 while upgrading from Exchange 2003, you get “Database is mandatory on UserMailbox. Property Name: Database…” and installation fails.

Also when you open up Exchange Management Console or Exchange Powershell:

VERBOSE: Connecting to myserver.domain.internal
[myserver.domain.internal]
Processing data from remote server failed with the following error message:
The user “domain\administrator” isn’t assigned to any management roles.
For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic.
Failed to connect to any Exchange Server in the current site.

Solution:

1- The user that you are using to install Exchange 2010 needs to be part of Organization Management AD group, go add that user in Active Directory users and computers.

2- Important too: Organization Management group needs to have “Propagate” permissions on the Microsoft Exchange in adsiedit. In my case the Exchange server was a domain controller as well.

Run adsiedit, Domain, DC=Domain, OU=Domain Controllers, CN=DomainControllerName (this is my Exchange server), right click and choose Properties, go to the Security tab and double-click on Organization Management, Advanced. Make sure the following is checked “Allow inheritable permissions from the parent to propagate to this object and all child objects”

If you look inside c:\ExchangeSetupLogs\ExchangeSetup.log to get more details about why it’s failing. If you see that the DiscoverySearchMailbox is having permissions error, apply the propagate permissions to that user too in adsiedit (the way you just did to the Organization Management group).

If you see any errors in the log about about user corruptions for DiscoverySearchMailbox user or FederatedEmail, you can delete them and recreate them again, then you can run the setup again. Here how to delete and recreate: Check these two articles:

How to backup VMs

If you are looking to backup virtual machines of Hyper-v or VMWare and looking for a free software to do it, you might want to consider Veeam (www.Veeam,com).  One of the features that wont be available since you will be using the free edition is being able to schedule backup Jobs from within Veeam.  The free edition will allow you to run backup on demand if that is what you are looking for.

You can schedule backup jobs using Powershell and Windows schedule task.  We will post an example on how to do that in the coming days.

How to build HTTP and HTTPS polices to use Webblocker and deny access based on Source IP Network/address or IP range

This is a quick published article that doesn’t include much detail but will give you very helpful hints.

WatchGuard uses Proxy settings to achieve such resolution. WatchGuard can act as a proxy to intercept HTTP/HTTPS requests in order to allow or deny access to sites based on source or destination networks or ports according to Policies built on it

When you choose to create a new policy in WatchGuard, you can choose it to be a packet filter (normal non-proxy rule), or a proxy policy. Now, create an HTTP-Proxy rule that includes that source network you want to apply the web-blocker to. Build another HTTPS-Proxy rule and apply it to that network, the same way. Then you can build two HTTP and HTTP (non-proxy rules, i.e packet filter) above them to allow other networks to bypass proxy policies that web blocker depends on. In the source network address of the non-proxy rules list only the networks that the proxy won’t apply to.

Now, instead of using a Web browser to access and manage the WatchGuard XTM/UTM admin portal, download and install WatchGuard System Manager… It’s much easier to work with and build the rules/policies what you want to.

After that, login in using the WatchGaurd System Manager, and from Tools menu click on Policy Manager to launch it. From Policy Manager click on Subscription Services, then WebBlocker and activate it.

HP EliteBook Screen issue

HP EliteBook 8440P Screen Flickers – Ambient Light Sensor:

Had this laptop with Windows 7 and sent twice to HP to fix and replace the display and every time it came back I had the same issue with the screen flickering. The following seems to have fixed it.

1- Download and apply the latest HP drivers and BIOS updates from HP website for the HP laptop.

2- Important: Run Windows Updates to download and install any available video driver (in my case it was nVidia).

3- If that does work, reboot laptop and boot to BIOS and disable Ambient Light Sensor.

4- You might also need to disable power management of the screen and prevent it from going to sleep.
