Network Switching
bostonIT is experienced in design and implementation of middle-tier network switching solutions. We recommend and specialize in Cisco Catalyst series networking products. Our experience includes work with Gigabit Ethernet, EtherChannel, VLANs, VTP and redundancy.
EtherChannel - the grouping of multiple physical Ethernet ports to create one virtual Ethernet port for increased aggregate throughput and/or redundant uplink.
VLAN (Virtual LAN) - a group of ports within a switched environment that act as a stand-alone switch. Without a router, or Supervisor module with MSFC you cannot route between VLANs.
VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) - the means by which a switched enviroment manages port membership to VLANs across the entire network.
MSFC (Multi-Layer Switch Feature Card) - embeds Cisco router technology into the supervisor module of a Catalyst switch.
Supervisor Module - the "brains" of the higher-end Cisco Catalyst switches (4000 series and higher)
